Foreigner Regional Registration office (FRRO), is the nodal agency to regulate the registration, stay, movement, departure and extension of visas for foreign nationals in India. The Chief immigration office is in Mumbai along with Regional registration offices in New Delhi, Mumbai ,Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Amritsar.
In other cities, the Superintendents of Police of the District acts as the registration officer for foreigners.
General instructions for Foreigners
Foreign nationals arriving in India for long term stay (more than 180 days) on Student visa, Medical visa, Research visa and Employment visa are required to register themselves with the FRRO/FRO officer, as per jurisdiction of the place, where the foreigner intends to stay, within 14 days of arrival, with the exception of Pakistani and Afghan nationals.
Pakistani nationals are required to register within 24 hours of their arrival regardless of the stay duration being less than or more than 180 days. Afghani nationals are required to register within 14 days, provided the duration of visa validity is more than 30 days. If the visa duration of the Afghan national is less than 30 days and they provide the local address to the respective Indian mission/FRRO/FRO, then registration is not required. If the visa issued to an Afghani national states "Exempt from police reporting" this entitles them to exemption from police reporting as well as exit permission provided they leave within the Visa validity period.
